Forensic services demand in the western part of the state has grown considerably and lab and support spaces are inadequate for current and projected volumes. Project goals included fostering collaboration between both the Medical Examiner and Crime Laboratory services and incorporating the high standards of customer service and scientific integrity for which the Institute has become known. The medical examiner and select forensic science disciplines include: morgue, pathology, histology, drug chemistry, firearms, forensic imaging, records, business office, medical investigations, anthropology, toxicology, and trace evidence.

The building systems include variable volume hybrid lab/office ventilation systems that include energy recovery. Steam and chilled water are connected to a district system that supports the Texas Medical Center.
