The complete interior demolition and renovated 12,200-sf facility with a 10,200-sf addition creates one cohesive, strategically programmed structure to house all of the coroner’s needs to serve 22 counties for the next 20 years. The Coroner’s office expanded morgue and pathology functions, provided larger toxicity and histology laboratories, introduced a family and visitor’s reception area, increased administration space, and created more storage for tissue samples, evidence, and archive records.
Previous studies also considered additions to the existing coroner’s office or a new facility. Because of its proximity to the coroner, renovating the adjacent vacant sheriff’s training facility was the most cost-effective option and allowed for less interruption of operations during construction. As morgue/lab specialty consultant to the architect, Crime Lab Design validated programming and developed morgue/lab architectural and MEP engineering schematic design. CLD’s design criteria included cost-saving energy upgrades.
